As we await who will be named the next President of the United States, the election on Tuesday did have a clear winner: drugs.
Ballot initiatives to legalize marijuana and decriminalize other drugs won major victories in New Jersey, South Dakota, Arizona, Mississippi, and Montana. In each of these states, marijuana was legalized in some form and Oregon became the first state to decriminalize all drugs.
Voters in Washington D.C. and Oregon also approved measures to make psychedelic mushrooms an option for therapeutic use. The practice, already underway in Canada is often prescribed to terminally ill patients as a way to cope with pain and anxiety associated with their illnesses.
South Dakota (surprise!) became the first state to legalize medical and recreational cannabis in the same election. Mississippi also passed a law allowing for medical marijuana. While New Jersey, Arizona, and Montana all passed recreational marijuana measures.
A Great Night for Marijuana
Marijuana and psychedelics have certainly come a long way in recent years.
There may not (as of early Nov 5th) be a clear presidential winner, but we can all agree marijuana had a great 2020 election.
